OVERVIEW

Jewish culture in Budapest is a beautiful tapestry dating back centuries, with the community’s contributions visible in the architecture and lifestyle in many places citywide today. Our tour provides an exclusive guided walking excursion with detailed insight for those who want to get a comprehensive picture of the roles of the Jews in 19th-century Hungary, and to identify causes of 20th-century anti-Semitism culminating in the Holocaust.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Expert insight on the history of Jews in Hungary
  • Herzl Square: the roots of Zionism, the concept of ‘neolog’ Jew
  • A guided walk in the Jewish Quarter, major landmarks of the ghetto of 1944
  • Jewish cultural revival after the fall of Communism
  • Flodni, the iconic Jewish delicacy at the Fröchlich Confectionary

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

While walking through Budapest’s historic and lively Jewish Quarter, an expert historian will brief you on the very complex subject of the Hungarian Jewish identity, and highlight how and why Jews integrated into Hungarian society, and at the same time what the attitude of the Hungarian majority was toward the Jewish population.

Participants learn about the role of the Jewish community in forming Pest into a prosperous city in the 19th century, and why the anti-Semitic mayor of Vienna coined the derogatory phrase “Judapest”.

During the walk in the Jewish District, you will learn more about Jewish lifestyle and customs and also what life was like in the ghetto after the German occupation of 1944. You will also understand why the arrival of the Red Army in 1945 is considered as a liberation and not an occupation by those who survived the deportations.

The tour will end with ‘flodni’ tasting at the Fröchlich Confectionary, where we wrap-up all the info and you will have an opportunity to ask anything you are interested in.

Jewish Heritage Tour

”A famous Hungarian, Joseph Pulitzer, once said, “Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light.” This is how Fungarian operates – fantastic information delivered in interesting and inspiring ways, exciting enthusiasm and allowing you to have fun at the same time – quite the best ‘tours’ I have ever been on. I felt as though I was spending the days with friends and learned so much – language, history, geography, cultural and social mores and much more. I learned about food, transport, tourism, politics – I could ask anything I wanted and above all I laughed and enjoyed myself. What more could a woman want out of life?”
